Materials Science & Engineering Pure & Applied Materials Metallic Materials: Ferrous alloys (steels, cast irons) and non-ferrous alloys (aluminum, titanium, magnesium, copper-nickel). Phase diagrams, heat treatment (annealing, quenching, tempering), and microstructural evolution. Polymers & Elastomers: Thermoplastics, thermosets, engineering plastics, rubber, and synthetic elastomers. Thermal degradation, glass transition, and mechanical behavior. Ceramics & Glasses: Structural ceramics (silicon nitride, alumina, zirconia), technical glasses, and high-temperature refractoriness. Composite Materials: Polymer matrix composites (carbon fiber, fiberglass), metal matrix composites (MMC), and ceramic matrix composites (CMC). Fiber orientation, lamination theory, and interface mechanics. Advanced & Smart Materials: Shape memory alloys (SMA), piezoelectric materials, self-healing materials, nano-engineered materials (graphene, carbon nanotubes), and biomaterials. Material Behavior & Testing Mechanical Testing: Tensile, hardness, impact, fatigue, fracture mechanics, and creep testing. Failure Analysis: Mechanisms of wear, corrosion, oxidation, fatigue crack propagation, and stress corrosion cracking. Characterization Techniques: Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and non-destructive evaluation (NDE/NDT). 2. Manufacturing Processes & Systems Primary Shaping & Forming Processes Casting & Solidification: Sand casting, investment casting, die casting, continuous casting, and defects analysis. Deformation & Bulk Metal Forming: Forging (open and closed die), rolling, extrusion, wire drawing, and sheet metal forming (stamping, deep drawing, hydroforming). Powder Metallurgy & Sintering: Metal powder production, compaction, sintering dynamics, and additive manufacturing powders. Material Removal & Machining Processes Traditional Machining: Turning, milling, drilling, boring, grinding, and tool wear mechanisms. Non-Traditional Machining: Electrical discharge machining (EDM), laser beam machining (LBM), water jet cutting, chemical machining, and electrochemical machining (ECM). Joining & Assembly Technologies Welding Processes: Fusion welding (GMAW, GTAW, SMAW), solid-state welding (friction stir welding, ultrasonic welding), laser welding, and heat-affected zone (HAZ) metallurgy. Adhesive Bonding & Fastening: Structural adhesives, surface preparation, mechanical fasteners, and multi-material joinery. Advanced & Digital Manufacturing Additive Manufacturing (3D Printing): Powder bed fusion (SLM, EBM), directed energy deposition (DED), vat photopolymerization (SLA), fused deposition modeling (FDM), and binder jetting. Surface Engineering & Coatings: Thermal spraying, physical vapor deposition (PVD), chemical vapor deposition (CVD), anodizing, electroplating, and shot peening. Smart Manufacturing & Automation: Computer-integrated manufacturing (CIM), flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), industrial robotics, Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), and Digital Twins. 3. Automobile Engineering & Powertrains Powertrain Systems Internal Combustion Engines (ICE): Spark-ignition (SI) and compression-ignition (CI) engines, thermodynamics cycles, fuel injection systems, turbocharging, supercharging, and emissions control. Electric Vehicle (EV) Systems: Battery chemistry (Li-ion, solid-state), Battery Management Systems (BMS), electric motors (PMMS, Induction), traction inverters, and thermal management. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV): Series, parallel, and series-parallel architectures, regenerative braking, and energy management strategy. Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCEV): Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), hydrogen storage tanks, and fuel cell balance of plant. Vehicle Dynamics, Chassis & Structural Design Chassis & Suspension: Suspension geometry (MacPherson, double wishbone, multi-link), spring and damper design, active suspension systems, and steering geometry. Braking & Safety Systems: Hydraulic and brake-by-wire systems, Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC), and regenerative-friction brake blending. Body & Structures (NVH & Crashworthiness): Vehicle body-in-white (BIW), crash energy management, crumple zones, roll cages, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) suppression. Connected, Autonomous & Vehicle Electronics Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): Radar, LiDAR, camera fusion, lane-keeping assistance, adaptive cruise control, and autonomous driving architectures (SAE Levels 1-5). Vehicle Architecture & Networking: Controller Area Network (CAN), Local Interconnect Network (LIN), FlexRay, Automotive Ethernet, and Over-the-Air (OTA) updates. Vehicle Aerodynamics & Thermal Management: Drag reduction, downforce generation, cabin HVAC, and motor/battery cooling loops. 4. Key Interrelated & Cross-Disciplinary Domains Lightweighting in Automotive Engineering: Intersection of Advanced Materials (carbon fiber, aluminum-lithium alloys), Advanced Manufacturing (hydroforming, multi-material joining), and Automobile Design to increase fuel efficiency and EV range. Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA): Tailoring vehicle component geometry during early engineering stages to simplify assembly, reduce tool wear, and optimize material usage. Lifecycle Engineering & Circular Economy: Sustainable material selection, recycling techniques for lithium-ion batteries, automotive end-of-life recovery, and green manufacturing processes. Tribology (Friction, Wear, & Lubrication): Applying surface engineering and material science to automotive components (piston rings, bearings, electric motor gearboxes) to maximize mechanical efficiency and lifespan. Simulations & Digital Prototyping: Utilizing Finite Element Analysis (FEA) for structural/crash testing, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) for aerodynamics, and process simulation for casting, forging, or injection molding.
